Concan, TX (Garner SP) March 30, 2009 When I first saw one of these spectacular birds, I thought it was a Scarlet Tanager, a birder quickly set me straight! Poor Kenny, he really had to use every ounce of patience he had when I would yell, "Stop now, I see another one of those red birds!", he would pull over as quickly as he could safely. It was fun to watch these birds dart out from a tree limb or a fence to catch an insect in mid-air. I must have looked pretty funny stalking the different birds I saw on the trip. The only one I didn't get a photo of was the Caracara. One was in the median along the interstate and I had my macro lens on another time and couldn't get a shot of it!
in Concan, TX. Due to the dangerous rocks, this area is closed to hiking. The next hill over can be hiked / climbed, but it is very difficult due to the steep elevation gain and all of the loose rocks. It was one of the hardest hikes we've ever done (the Skyline trail in Alaska was steeper, but it didn't have the rocks).
This is the Overlook trail?! Yes, note the yellow rectangle trail blaze painted on the rock above. We noticed the rangers don't use cairns (piles of stacked rocks to mark the trail) here like many other parks in the west, I guess they would just blend in too much to notice and hikers would get lost!
