Oak Ridge, TN September 23, 2008 One of my students found this nymph at school during an insect hunt. It is a beautiful creature with its brilliant red and gunmetal blue-black colors. It has a piercing mouthpart that it uses to drink fluids from its prey.
A mass of Boxelder bug on the back steps of our house on Feb. 7, 2009.
I enjoyed seeing these red bug nymphs on this leaf in a "defense circle", they reminded me a bit of musk oxen when they stand head out in a circle to protect their young.
