Close-up of Dobsonfly egg cases
Dobsonfly eggcases These white crusty patches under the 100' Piney River Trail bridge are the eggcases of Dobsonflies. These are large aquatic insects that spend their larval stage in water. The larvae are called "hellgrammites." They have long, sharp mandibles with which they can bite.
This photo was taken at Roan Mountain State Park in upper east Tennessee in late April. These Caddisfly larvae chew off pieces of aquatic plants to make their cases.
