Giant Silkworm and Royal Moths (Saturniidae) #7746 June 2008 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) What a surprise it must be for a bird that is expecting a nice juicy moth when it suddenly sees what appears to be large owl eyes. The Io Moth flashes these false eye spots to frighten off hungry predators.
Giant Silkworm and Royal Moths (Saturniidae) June 15, 2007 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) We had seen this large yellow moth on the blacklight sheet 2 mornings in a row at science camp. One of the groups caught it in a jar. Someone said, "Wait until you see it open its wings!" The next photo will show the surprise this moth has in store for any potential predator!
