Hodges #8146 This is the same Crazy Caterpillar when it was curled up in a ball. The red stripes are a form of protective coloration if the stiff, black hairs don't deter a predator. It will turn into a white moth with black spots. I get a lot of requests for identification of this caterpillar in the fall! (keywords: black hairy caterpillar with red stripes)
Geometrid (Inchworm) Moths Hodges #7058 At first glance, this Daisy looked like it had a brown, dead leaf in the middle of it. Upon closer inspection I noticed it moved! The brown "leaf" was actually a caterpillar that had camouflaged itself with cut flower petals. It will eat the disk flowers in the center of the daisy.
Hodges #8204 This little fuzzy caterpillar was crawling on the bridge over Panther Branch at Frozen Head. It reminded me of one of those prissy little long-haired dogs that the owners tie little bows on! I checked it out in my new Eastern Caterpillars book to get a name for it.
