Anisota stigma #7716 Great Smoky Mountains NP (Blount Co., TN) 7-11-11 The sheet where I found this moth was not far from a small river at Tremont in the Smokies, therefore, there were LOTS of mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies and midges on the sheet too!
Polyphemus Moth - false eyes Antheraea polyphemus #7757 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) 7-22-11 These moths open their upper wings to flash their "false eyes" to frighten predators. I blew gently on the moth to get it to do this! The open area of the eyespot is transparent, there are no scales.
Antheraea polyphemus #7757 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) 7-22-11 I screamed with delight when I saw this moth on my carport (and scared my poor husband to death!). It was my first Polyphemus. This moth had a 6" wingspan! The false eyes on the lower wings are partially visible.
