The reproductive bodies of this squamulose lichen are bright red like the coats of the British soldiers during the Revolutionary War, which gives the lichen its name. These lichens grow on the ground, decayed wood, or on tree bark. I remember learning about this lichen when I was in the Girl Scouts many years ago; this is one reason I love sharing my knowledge and passion for nature with children, I hope that someday they too will pass on their knowledge with the upcoming generations!
