This twig from a tree in Bastrop, TX was completely covered with a mix of odd lichens!
Big South Fork This type of lichen grows on the ground. It is soft and spongy when damp, it crumbles if stepped upon when dry. It is very common in limestone cedar glade areas in Tennessee. Lichens are very sensitive to environmental changes because they aborb pollutants from the air. High concentrations of smog can kill lichens.
I photographed these Reindeer Lichens on top of North Arch at Big South Fork. Both the Gray and Dixie Reindeer Lichens are growing here.
