Big South Fork March 21, 2009 Note the dichotomous branching of this lichen's branches. These lichens are soft and spongy when wet, but are brittle when dry and will break if stepped on.
Big South Fork (Oneida, TN) March 21, 2009 This is a very odd little squamulose lichen. The branches (podetia) form little cups or branch even further at the ends.
Big South Fork (Oneida, TN) March 21, 2009 The little brown, bent tips of this lichen help in identification, but it takes close-up observation to see them. I found this lichen growing next to Dixie Reindeer lichen (Cladina subtenuis) which was a more greenish tint.
