Big South Fork (Oneida, TN) March 21, 2009 This was a really weird lichen! I wasn't even sure it was a lichen, but I remembered they can be black due to the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in the cells. I photographed this lichen growing on a rock wall near Slave Falls in the Big South Fork area.
These Black Shag and white powdery Lichens were growing on a damp rock cliff at Big South Fork.
These little grainy structures are called isidia, they are the reproductive bodies of this lichen.
