Big South Fork (Oneida, TN) March 21, 2009 The little brown, bent tips of this lichen help in identification, but it takes close-up observation to see them. I found this lichen growing next to Dixie Reindeer lichen (Cladina subtenuis) which was a more greenish tint.
The shelf-like growth pattern of a squamulose lichen (Cladonia) is visible in this photo.
? This lichen is related to the Pixie Cups and British Soldier lichens. It has short podetia with brown apothecia instead of red.
