The fog was very thick, but we could still see some shore birds. This Curlew was working the surfline hunting for crabs and other crustaceans.
This Curlew was eating crabs in the sand at the Moss Landing Marina in California. Curlews use their long, thin beaks to extract crabs from the sand.
These comical, noisy birds are one of my favorite shore birds. These are nesting on the causeway between the mainland and Navarre Beach in Florida. The lower bill is longer than the upper one, it is used to skim the surface of the water to catch fish.
