St. George Is., FL May 21, 2010 We were excited to see a school of 8 - 10 of these rays feeding at the edge of the surfline. Like a stingray, Cownose Rays have a spine on the tail that can inflict a mild sting.
This shark was caught off the pier at Navarre Beach. It is a bit unnerving to see these predators (and other, larger sharks) so close to areas where people swim at the beach.
Ampullae of Lorenzini are the tiny pores located on a shark's head. They are special sensing organs called electroreceptors which can pick up the electrical fields given off by heartbeats and muscle movement. Sharks have rows of teeth that can allow a new tooth to move in to replace one that may be lost.
