These girls study the shapes of fish tails in the Oceanography class. V-shaped tails allow carnivorous fish to swim fast and for long distances. Fish with rounded tails are slow-swimming grazers. The tails are made from styrofoam cartons.
I like to dress the part or wear shirts and socks that go with what I'm teaching (I have an extensive collection of T-shirts!). During the Oceanography unit I don my mask, fins, bouancy compensator, and snorkle to show the students some of the equipment used for exploring underwater. (Please don't laugh too hard at my pot-bellied Orca! I'm not an artist!)
These kindergarteners measure 35 grams of rock salt in the Oceanography class. They get hands-on experience in using scientific equipment in the Discovery Center.
