Milkweed Family Height:12" to 28" August 1, 2005 I was excited to find this plant in bloom in the Jefferson Middle School Cedar Barrens. I'm so glad that area was saved from development several years ago! This "biological goldmine" was in danger of becoming a shopping mall! Unlike other Milkweeds, the flowers of the Green Milkweed does not have the "horns", little points that protrude from the hoods. Perennial Where seen: Jefferson Middle School Cedar Barrens
Loosestrife Family Aquatic (INN) Rank 1 This plant has pretty purple flowers, but it can be a serious pest in a wetland. It is an aquatic non-native that can crowd out beneficial native plants. I found this plant (and many others like it) growing along South Illinois Ave. in Oak Ridge in mid-July.
Bluebell Family Height: 1' to 4' June 1, 2005 These flowers appear white in this picture, but they are a very pale blue. I found these blooming in Oak Ridge in a cedar barrens area. Perennial Where seen: Jefferson Middle School Cedar Barrens; Haw Ridge Greenway, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warrior's Path SP
