plant
Parsley or Carrot Family Height:6' August 12, 2005 I found this plant blooming along the trail to the top of Max Patch, a beautiful bald near the Tennessee / North Carolina border. It blooms in the higher elevations of the Smokies too. Like other plants in the Parsley Family, it attracts bees and other insect pollinators. The Angelicas have an interesting habit of bhe buds being enclosed in the leaves before blooming. This species is smooth, A. venenosa or Hairy Angelica is downy, it also has white flowers. Perennial Where seen:Max Patch, NC, Great Smoky Mountains
Pea Family This is the Alfalfa that is eaten by cattle and horses. The nipped-off end on the right side of the picture indicates that it is also enjoyed by deer. It can sometimes be found growing as an escape in the wild. I found this plant growing at the Three Bends Scenic Wildlife Area in early June. People often eat the seed sprouts of Alfalfa on sandwiches and salads. Perennial Where seen: Oak Ridge Greenways, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP
