Agavaceae (Agave Family) Joshua Tree National Park March 19, 2007 These "trees" are not really trees at all, they are large yuccas. The early Mormon settlers thought they looked like the prophet Joshua raising his arms to heaven as they crossed the desert. Joshua Trees grow only in the "high" desert. The park has 2 deserts, the higher Mojave and the lower Colorado. Each desert has its own unique plants.
Carrizo Plain, CA March 23, 2007 This was one of the few plants that was able to grow on the banks of the Soda lake. It had long spines with small leaves and flowers.
