Heath Family These wild azalea flowers have a very strong, sweet fragrance. They are also quite sticky (thus the name "viscosum") as I learned when I removed some loose, brown, wilted flower petals for this photograph! All parts of azaleas are deadly poisonous to people. Perennial Where seen: Piney River Pocket Wilderness, Great Smoky Mountains NP
Burr Reed Family Aquatic Bays Mountain Park - Kingsport, TN June 23, 2007 Monoecious There were lots of these plants growing in the wetland areas along the bank of Bays Mountain Lake. The upper flowers are staminate or male, the green flowers are the pistillate or female flowers.
Pink Family Elizabethton, TN June 22, 2007 Unfortunately, I was not able to photograph these flowers until late in the afternoon, the petals had curled up already. I found these blooming in a crack in the pavement at a hotel parking lot! Sometimes I don't have to look very far to find flowers!
