Bastrop, TX (Bastrop State Park) March 26, 2009 There are relatives of this plant growing in Florida and New Mexico. They do have a green center before the disk flowers open.
Batesville, TX April 1, 2009 Mesquite grows all over the Hill Country, but this was one of the few trees I saw in bloom. The fresh new leaves are a pretty lime green. Mesquite wood is used to flavor barbeque.
