This beautiful little Kestrel (Falco sparverius) was photographed during a bird program at Ijams Nature Center. These are the smallest of the falcons and are often called "Sparrow Hawks". They eat grasshoppers, small rodents, and even small birds. The black lines under the eyes are used to cut down on glare, much like how football players put black patches under their eyes.
Falcons have a long tail, long, pointed wings and can dive at very high speeds.
