Ft. Loudon Dam - Lenoir City, TN
August 12, 2007
My husband spotted this bird while I was at another area of the trail below the dam photographing ospreys. He used some elaborate hand signals to let me know he had seen something interesting without making any noise. I was thrilled that this bird did not fly away when I approached. These herons are much smaller than Great Blue Herons. They are common birds, but since they feed at dusk and at night, they are not seen as often. During our science camp at the lake, we often see them flying back to their roost about 8:30 in the morning.
