This is a young male who has not yet grown in all of the red feathers on his neck and head. I photographed this bird on a feeder in my uncle's backyard from a 6' ladder. It helped to be on the same level as the tiny birds. I found it difficult to photograph the red feathers, called a gorget, the birds had to be at just the right angle to reflect the red light, otherwise the feathers looked olive-colored.
Hummingbirds have such short legs it is impossible for them to walk, they can only perch.
