Palo Alto, CA

Every time one of these magnificent hawks flew close enough to get a good photo, I was traveling in the car or I had the wrong lens on my camera. This shot was taken over the mudflats at the Palo Alto Baylands as the Harrier hunted for birds below. A fellow I met who was watching the birds said, "If you see the shore birds fly away suddenly, look up, there is probably a hawk nearby!" This bird has a distinctive white band above the tail. I enjoyed watching it hover as it hunted. No wonder the British named a war jet for these birds!
