Black Skimmer - breeding plumage
St. George Is., FL
May 21, 2010
These birds didn't show up until late each afternoon, often the light was so bad I couldn't take a photo. I was thrilled to get this shot of the Skimmer eating. The bird's lower beak is longer than the top beak, so it uses it to skim the surface of the water to catch fish. They are comical-looking birds!
