Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel
Callospermophilus lateralis
These cute little animals look like chipmunks, but they are squirrels that live in burrows in the ground. They often beg for food at heavily visited areas. Feeding wild rodents is dangerous for both the animals and people. Often the squirrels take food back to their burrow, much of the human food that they stored for winter will decay causing the animals to starve to death. Some ground squirrels carry the deadly bubonic plague bacterium, if the fleas that have fed on them bite people, they can spread the disease.
