There is a 1-in-3 chance of getting a clear view of the Arenal Volcano ("Volcán Arenal"). We were thrilled to wake up to this sight on our last day in La Fortuna! This mountain, like the other volcanoes in Costa Rica, is active (note the steam coming out of the peak). Costa Rica is located along the "Ring of Fire", a trench lies along the coast, where the oceanic crust is plunging below the continental crust. A chain of active volcanoes make up the spine of the country, earthquakes are common. People are not allowed to hike near the volcano due to the danger of hot rocks that are often erupted from the peak. The last time this volcano had a major eruption was in 1964. Note how trees are not growing on the right flank (north side) of the mountain.
