The Methodist church and cemetery in Cades Cove is a peaceful stop along the loop road. There are several churches in the Cove. The old gravestones have many stories to tell. It seems that the early mountain settlers either died very young or they lived to be quite elderly. One can only wonder if they died from epidemics, complications from childbirth, etc. One sign at a church tells how a person's death would be "announced" by ringing of the church bells, one ring for each year of the person's age. Most people could figure out who the person was if they counted the number of rings!
