Caltrop seed; Goathead; Puncture Vine
Las Cruces, NM
Oct. 4, 2008
I always try to find a hotel that is located near undeveloped property, those kinds of lots usually have wildflowers (or often, weeds)! I checked Google Maps when I started looking for a hotel in Las Cruces. The one we stayed in was fairly new and had vacant lots nearby and a wash (dry creekbed) behind it. I found several wildflowers there! This was one I had to beware of though, it has earned each of its common names. The plants grow prostrate on the ground and the bigger ones cover large areas. I learned to keep an eye out for these wicked spiked seeds! I'd hate to step on one of those barefooted!
