Our last day in New Mexico was quite exciting! As we were hiking along a trail at Dripping Springs, something caught my eye moving in the grass, it was this huge tarantula! We gently coaxed it onto the trail so I could get a photo. More than likely, this is a large male who was out searching for a female. We saw four tarantulas that day, this was the largest at nearly the size of my hand. Many people are freaked out about such large spiders (and in some cases, even small spiders!), but they are fascinating to observe at a comfortable distance. Despite their size, tarantulas are not dangerous, their venomous bite is comparable to a wasp or bee sting.
