Southern Ringneck Snake
Diadophis punctatus punctatus
This is one of my favorite snakes! We found this adorable little hatchling on a warm spring day while hiking along the Mead's Quarry Trail at Ijams Nature Center. It did try to bite Kenny while he held it, but it couldn't do much damage with such a tiny mouth!
Ringneck snakes grow to an average of about 12". They typically eat slugs, small salamanders, snakes and lizards, and earthworms.
