Note the ant on the stem. These plants have small, round, black "cups" on the stems that attract ants. These glands (extrafloral nectaries) protect the flowers from being entered by nectar-robbing ants. The seeds of Vicia species contain the tongue-twisting toxin beta-cyano-L-alanine.
