Wister's or Spring Coralroot
Corallorhiza wisteriana / Orchid family
Oak Ridge, TN
April 22, 2009
I had been looking for this plant for the past 3 springs. I was determined to find it this year. Thanks to my botanist friend, Larry, for flagging it so I could find it! These plants were only 5 - 6 inches tall and not very colorful. They are saprophytes, they contain no chlorophyll and obtain their nutrients from the decaying leaves and other organic matter in the soil.
