Vaccinium stamineum / Heath Family

These flowers were blooming in the Tremont area of the Smokies in mid-May. They produce berries, but they are not tasty like the closely related, juicy, sweet blueberries. The corolla of the bell-shaped flowers of Deerberry are more open than Blueberry or Farkelberry. Note the long pistil on each flower. You'll find these bushes growing in dry woods in acidic soil.
