Ilex opaca / Holly Family
The holly is a dioecious tree, the female flowers are on one tree, the male flowers on a different tree. These flowers are obviously female, the berries from last year's flowers are still present. Birds must not be too fond of holly berries, otherwise they would have been eaten before spring. This picture was taken at Tremont in the Smokies in mid-May.
