Salvia lyrata /Mint Family

This plant is also found in the open on the edges of woods. I found this one blooming in Oak Ridge. It often forms large patches. Look for the larger basal leaves that lay flat on the ground. In winter the basal leaves are often a maroon hue. Like other mints, this plant has a square stem; it has no minty smell though.
