Due to a time crunch, we weren't able to hike as far as we would have liked at Lost Maples State Natural Area, near Leakey, we had traveled from Boerne and still had to drive on to Concan that afternoon. We hiked just a couple of miles on the East Trail, from the "you are here" sign in the middle to the oval overlook symbol in the top middle. This park is a great habitat for birds, many unusual species can be spotted here (including the endangered Yellow-cheeked Warbler). It is named for the Bigtooth Maples that grow in the area, most of the Hill Country does not have those trees. Texas State Parks charge admission fees per person, not per car like many states. We paid from $4 - $6 per person at the different parks we visited.
