This photo of a "Wandering Jew" (Tradescantia zebrina) leaf was taken with a digital compound microscope at 40X. Compound microscopes shine the light through the specimen, so it has to be very thin. These microscopes have a higher magnification than stereoscopes, but the with the increase in magnification there is a decrease in the amount of light and resolution (clarity).
