Snowberry Clearwing Moth
Hemaris diffinis / Sphinx Moths
Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.)
These moths look a lot like bumblebees, but they are harmless. They mimic the large black and yellow bees which protects them from hungry birds, this is called mimicry. These moths have very few scales on their wings which are easily dislodged. It is a misconception that moths and butterflies have to have scales on their wings to be able to fly. The problem with handling these insects is that the wings can be damaged if they are caught by hand.
