American Dog Tick; Wood Tick (male?)
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
May 10, 2008
After hiking in the Smokies, I noticed this tick crawling on my friend's shirt. I put it on a wall and photographed it with my macro lens.
Ticks are tough and amazing little critters. Any animal that can live for nearly two years between meals has to be admired for their patience! These ticks usually don't feed on humans. In the early stages of their life cycle they feed on rodents, the adults feed on the blood of dogs.
