Ken and I were welcomed by this whirling salt storm on the banks of Great Salt Lake within an hour of our arrival in Salt Lake City in Oct. 2005. The lake level was very low and we had to walk quite a distance to reach the water line. As we walked I noticed a strange swirling, white cloud moving rapidly toward us. We realized it was a "salt devil", similar to a dust devil. We were quickly overtaken by it and buffeted by 50 - 60 mile per hour winds filled with dust and dry salt! It was hard to hang on to my hat, cover my camera, hold my breath and keep my eyes closed. This is a good example of a small low pressure system.
